Walk A Mile With Behind A Smile Abbitt Memorial Park 129 Main St Appomattox Va. 24522

DID YOU KNOW:

  • Over 1 in 10 youth in the U.S. are experiencing depression that is severely impairing their ability to function at school or work, at home, with family, or in their social life. 16.39% of youth (age 12-17) report suffering from at least one major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year. 11.5% of youth (over 2.7 million youth) are experiencing severe major depression.

  • 59.8% of youth with major depression do not receive any mental health treatment. Asian youth with major depression were least likely to receive specialty mental health care, with 78% reporting they did not receive mental health services in the past year. In South Carolina, the lowest-ranking state, nearly 8 in 10 youth with depression do not receive care.

  • Nationally, only 28% of youth with severe depression receive some consistent treatment (7-25+ visits in a year).  Most (57.3%) youth with severe depression do not receive any care.

  • Nationally, 1 in 10 youth who are covered under private insurance do not have coverage for mental or emotional difficulties – totaling over 1.2 million youth. In Arkansas (ranked 51), nearly one-quarter of youth with private insurance do not have coverage for mental health care.

  • Only .718 percent of students are identified with emotional disturbance for an individualized education program (IEP). IEPs, with sufficient resources for schools and teachers, are critical for ensuring that youth with disabilities can receive the individualized services, support, and accommodations to succeed in a school setting.

  • In the U.S., there are an estimated 350 individuals for every one mental health provider. However, these figures may actually be an overestimate of active mental health professionals, as it may include providers who are no longer practicing or accepting new patients..

We invite you to join us for a day of bringing public awareness to the Mental Health Crisis that is on the rise in our children and Youth

We are excited to bring our first Mental Wellness Fair to Spotsylvania County Public Schools! We’ll host our first “Adopt A School” Mental Health Fair at Chancellor Middle School.

What is more exciting? We have opportunities to send 810 kids home over the summer break with tools that will keep them in a positive mindset. We want every kid to know they are important and they each have a voice.

Women's Day Off 2022

Ladies, this is your time!

We invite you to join us for a day filled with relaxing with other ladies and be inspired by women that have experienced(or have family members) the unhealthy side effects of unhealthy brain functions.

As women, we always wear multiple hats, mother, wife, teacher, counselor, cab driver, and so much more. With all of this, there is very little time to spend on ourselves! That is the heart behind this event.

Six years ago, I held my first Women’s Day Off event after speaking at an event in NC. At that event, I observed a room filled with laughter from women that loved shopping in a relaxed atmosphere and visiting with one another as they shopped and enjoyed refreshments.

And now, six years later, we are hosting this event just for you! We have Speakers, Workshops, Vendors, and a special spa area for you to get a spa service if you so desire. A few of the services being offered are Massage, Foot Detox, and Eyebrow/eyelash tinting.

The most exciting part of this event for me is the roundtable from 7-8 pm! Made up of counselors and teens! So ladies, please bring every teenage young lady that you know because there will be teens ready to answer questions and share their life-changing stories and answer any questions that they may have. I don’t want to spoil it so I will leave you with this Video

Surprise

This event is open to the public and you can come and go as you please! Get your tickets here Register

Leaving The Shadows

Leaving The Shadows

Thank you for your interest in participating in our “Leaving The Shadows” mental health awareness walk.

Suicide is the fourth-leading cause of death for adolescents ages 15-19 globally. That is the global number. this is tragic and heartbreaking. We believe that the stigma associated with Mental Illnesses is one of the major reasons that youth will not talk about it. We also believe that one story can save many lives.

Behind A Smile is standing up to be a VOICE in the community! We want to give youth a place to not only feel safe, but safe enough to share.

“We will be the leading STIGMA fighting organization in the local area for your kids and for mine.” ~ A local grandmother ~

We are committed to giving youth a space to share their story. One of the ways that we are doing this now is The Wall

Would you join us in the fight? Register your team and join us on Sunday, March 20th at 3 PM for the “Leaving The Shadow” walk. You will laugh! You will cry! You may even win a prize or two! But most importantly, you will hear from amazing speakers and raise money to pay for a child to have excellent care before a mental health crisis happens. We look forward to seeing you there!
